Create a PDF portfolio that is easy to review
A portfolio gives a selection of work a clear beginning, context and ending. A reviewer should not have to guess what each image shows or what you contributed. This guide offers a structure to adapt, not a fixed template.
Start with the person who will review it
Write one sentence about what you want the selection to demonstrate. Use it to choose relevant projects instead of adding every piece you have made. A portfolio for packaging illustration, for example, may need different examples from one for book design.
An adaptable six-page outline
- Cover: your name, area of work and a sentence that describes the selection.
- Main project: a clear image and the project objective.
- Process: one important choice, an alternative considered and the outcome.
- Second project: another example that adds a different strength.
- Details: close-ups or information that is hard to see in the overall image.
- Contact: a way to reach you and the next step you want to suggest.
Prepare the PDF for sharing
Six pages are only an example. Follow the opportunity’s requirements first. For collaborative work, identify your own contribution instead of taking credit for the whole project.
If your pages are already images, use the image-to-PDF tool and check their order. If each project is already a PDF, combine the files only when one document is requested. These tools organize existing material; they do not create the portfolio text or layout.
For selectable text, prepare the pages in a document or presentation editor and export to PDF. Keep the editable source for future versions.
Use captions to add context
A useful caption can state the project’s goal, your role and one design decision. Example: “Concept packaging for a fictional café. My contribution: illustration and layout. Goal: distinguish three flavors without relying on color alone.” This is a fictional example, not a real project or testimonial.
Review it as the recipient would
Open the downloaded PDF on a phone. Check that captions are readable, pages have the right orientation and contact details are current. Confirm you have permission to show each item. If the file is too large, revise images at their source and review our guide to organizing travel receipts in a PDF.

Frequently asked questions
How many pages should a portfolio have?
There is no universal page count. Follow the opportunity’s instructions and choose enough examples to explain your work without adding unrelated material.
Should I include every project?
No. Select work that supports the purpose of the portfolio, and explain your role in collaborative projects.
Can I turn every page into an image?
You can, but selectable text is easier to search and may be more accessible. Export from an editor when possible and review the PDF afterward.
