Text encoding converter: Base64 and URL
Convert text to and from UTF-8 Base64 or URL percent encoding. Accented characters and emoji are handled as UTF-8. The conversion runs in this browser; do not treat encoding as a way to protect confidential information.
What is Base64?
Base64 represents bytes using a limited set of text characters. It is used in some APIs, email attachments and data URLs. It is an encoding format, not encryption.
The UTF-8 text “Olá mundo!” becomes “T2zDoCBtdW5kbyE=” in Base64.
What is URL percent encoding?
Percent encoding represents bytes that need escaping as a percent sign followed by two hexadecimal digits. Encode a value intended for one URL component, such as a query parameter; do not encode a whole URL as though it were one value.
For example, “Olá mundo!” becomes “Ol%C3%A1%20mundo!” with this tool.
When to use each format
- Base64 can carry binary data through text-only fields, for example in some API payloads or data URLs.
- Percent encoding helps place reserved characters safely inside an individual URL component.
Security and size limits
- Base64 is not encryption. Anyone with the encoded string can decode it; do not use it to hide passwords, tokens or personal data.
- Base64 usually increases the encoded size by about one third, before any surrounding format overhead.
- URL encoding changes representation; it does not authenticate, encrypt or make a destination trustworthy.
- This page converts text, not uploaded files.
Frequently asked questions
Does Base64 make text secret?
No. It is reversible encoding, not encryption.
Why does Base64 output end in an equals sign?
The equals sign can be padding used to complete a Base64 block.
Can I encode an entire URL?
Use URL encoding for a component, such as a parameter value. Encoding an entire URL can change separators and make the address unusable.
