Check the limit that applies to your destination

Character and word limits vary by service, field and product version. Use this count as a draft check, then confirm the current limit in the platform or form where you will submit the text.

How the counts work

  • Words are groups separated by whitespace. Punctuation attached to a word stays with it.
  • Characters with spaces count JavaScript UTF-16 code units, including spaces and line breaks; the no-spaces figure excludes whitespace. Emoji outside the basic multilingual plane can count as two units, and destination platforms may count symbols differently.
  • Sentence count is an estimate based on common sentence-ending punctuation. Abbreviations and initials can affect it.
  • Paragraphs are non-empty blocks separated by line breaks.

Reading time is only an estimate

The estimate uses about 200 words per minute for silent reading and 140 words per minute for reading aloud. Actual pace depends on the reader, language and material.

Frequently asked questions

Does an emoji count as one character?

This counter counts Unicode code points. Some emoji are made from multiple code points, and other services may count them differently. Check the destination platform for strict limits.

Does this tool save or upload my text?

No. Counting runs in your browser and this page does not submit the text to our server.

Why can sentence count differ from a word processor?

This is a simple estimate based on punctuation and whitespace. Abbreviations, initials and unusual punctuation can change the result.
