Volume converter: litres, mL and US measures

Convert metric volume units and selected US customary measures. The tool labels US units explicitly and keeps the 236.588 mL customary cup separate from the 240 mL cooking measure.

Examples

  • 0.75 L = 750 mL.
  • 1 L is about 0.264 US liquid gallons.
  • Two US customary cups are about 473.176 mL; two 240 mL measures equal 480 mL.

Units and conventions

A litre is 1,000 millilitres and a cubic metre is 1,000 litres. One US liquid gallon is exactly 3.785411784 L. US customary cup and the rounded 240 mL cooking measure are shown separately. This selector does not include the different Imperial gallon.

Before using a recipe or specification

  • Choose the unit written in the source recipe or specification. A cup can mean 236.588 mL or a rounded 240 mL measure.
  • US fluid ounces measure volume; ounces (oz) without “fluid” usually refer to mass.
  • Volume alone does not determine mass. Converting millilitres to grams requires the material density.

Frequently asked questions

Is a US gallon the same as an Imperial gallon?

No. This converter uses the US liquid gallon (3.785411784 L); the Imperial gallon is different and is not included.

Why are there two cup options?

A US customary cup is about 236.588 mL. Some recipes use a rounded 240 mL measure, so the tool keeps them separate.

Can I convert millilitres directly to grams?

Only if you know the substance density. Equal volumes of different materials can have different masses.
