Hours calculator: add, subtract and convert

Add work intervals or other durations in h:mm format, use a minus sign to subtract an entry, and convert a duration to or from decimal hours. This is a time arithmetic tool; it does not calculate payroll, overtime or legal work-hour balances.

Add or subtract times

Convert h:mm and decimal hours

Enter 7:30 to convert to decimal hours, or 7.5 to convert to h:mm.

Minutes as decimal hours

  • 15 minutes = 0.25 hours
  • 30 minutes = 0.50 hours
  • 45 minutes = 0.75 hours
  • 6 minutes = 0.10 hours; divide minutes by 60 to convert them.

Why minutes are not decimal fractions of an hour

An hour has 60 minutes. To convert h:mm to decimal hours, divide the minutes by 60: 7:48 is 7 + 48/60 = 7.8 hours. To convert decimal hours to h:mm, multiply the fractional part by 60; 7.5 hours is 7 hours and 30 minutes.

Use the result carefully

This tool adds elapsed durations. It does not know a shift schedule, breaks, premiums, local employment rules or how an employer rounds time. Check the applicable records and rules before using a result for payroll or a formal time balance.

Frequently asked questions

Is 0.5 hour the same as 50 minutes?

No. 0.5 hour is 30 minutes because 0.5 × 60 = 30.

Can I subtract a duration?

Yes. Start a line with a minus sign, such as −0:30, to subtract 30 minutes from the total.

Does this calculate overtime pay?

No. It only adds, subtracts and converts durations. Pay calculations depend on schedules, agreements and applicable rules.
