Compress an image
Resize an image to a maximum width and export a compressed copy. The file is processed in your browser; the original stays unchanged.
How to use this tool
- Choose a supported image and output format.
- Set quality and maximum width for your intended use.
- Compare the preview and file sizes before downloading.
Example
For an email attachment, try WebP at quality 80 with a maximum width of 1,600 pixels, then compare the result with the original.
Limits and format notes
Files are limited to 20 MB and 25 megapixels; maximum output width is 8,000 pixels. PNG ignores the lossy-quality setting. JPEG replaces transparency with a white background. Animated GIFs are exported as a still image. A compressed copy can be larger than the original.
Processing and privacy
The selected file is decoded and converted in this browser. Its image data is not uploaded to the server for processing. Site code and fonts still load over the normal connection. Download the result before closing or reloading the page.
Frequently asked questions
Does the image leave my device?
The selected image is processed in your browser and is not sent to the server for conversion.
Why can the compressed file be larger?
The output format, quality setting and image content affect file size. Compare the result and keep the original if it is smaller or clearer.
Does the quality setting affect PNG?
No. PNG export is lossless in this tool, so the quality control does not reduce its file size. Choose WebP or JPEG, or reduce dimensions, if you need a smaller copy.
