Compress a PDF and check the result

Compression rewrites resources inside a PDF. The result depends on the document, and a file that is already optimized may not get smaller. Keep the original and check the copy before sending it.

Privacy: This operation uploads your PDF to the server over the site connection for temporary processing. The uploaded file and generated copy are deleted after processing or an error. If the document is confidential and cannot be shared, use software on your own device.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose a copy of the PDF and an output profile.
  2. Wait for processing, which can take up to two minutes.
  3. Compare the file sizes and download the result.
  4. Open the PDF and check every page, small numbers, text and images.

Choose a profile for your purpose

Balanced is a starting point for screen reading. Stronger reduction can affect photos, stamps and small lettering. For printing, choose higher quality. No profile guarantees a particular final size.

Example

If a form accepts 5 MB and your PDF is 12 MB, try Balanced and compare the downloaded copy with the actual limit. If it is still over 5 MB, try Stronger reduction only if the text remains readable. Do not remove required pages.

Limits and things to check

Rewriting a PDF can invalidate digital signatures. Do not use the compressed copy in place of the signed original. Check forms, accessibility features and attachments too. Protected or damaged PDFs may not be processed.

Frequently asked questions

Why did the PDF not get smaller?

Text files and already-compressed images may leave little room to reduce size. If the output would be larger, the service preserves and returns the smaller original.

Can I try again if the server is busy?

Yes. The service handles up to two conversions at a time and allows three attempts per minute per IP address. Wait a minute before trying again.
