File hash generator
Calculate a SHA-256, SHA-384 or SHA-512 digest from a file on your device. The calculation runs in your browser and the file contents are not uploaded.
How to use this tool
- Select a file from your device, up to 100 MB.
- Choose SHA-256, SHA-384 or SHA-512.
- Copy the hexadecimal digest or download the report. Compare it with a digest from a source you trust.
Example
Two files with exactly the same bytes produce the same SHA-256 digest, even if their names differ. Changing a byte will normally produce a different digest.
Limits and security
- Files can be up to 100 MB. Large files may take longer because the browser reads the selected file into memory.
- A hash is not encryption: it does not hide the contents, prove that a file is safe or identify who created it.
- A matching digest is useful only when you compare it with a value obtained through a trusted channel.
- Calculation happens in your browser; file contents are not uploaded. This page requires HTTPS and a browser with the Web Crypto API.
Frequently asked questions
Is a file hash the same as encryption?
No. A hash is a fixed-length digest calculated from data. It does not encrypt or conceal the file, and it cannot be reversed to recover the original contents.
Does a matching hash prove that a file is safe?
No. It shows that the compared bytes match the reference digest. It does not establish whether the file is harmless or trustworthy; the reference value must also come from a trusted source.
Are filenames included in the hash?
No. The digest is calculated from the file contents, not its name or date. Files with identical bytes therefore have the same digest.
