What grade do I need on the final?

Enter your grades so far, optional weights, your target average and the weight of the remaining assessment. The calculation assumes a weighted average.

Enter your grades to get an estimate.

Calculate the grade you need

  1. Enter your grades and, if needed, a positive weight for each one.
  2. Set your target average, the weight of the remaining assessment and the maximum grade.
  3. The result is a mathematical estimate; check your school grading rules.

Example

With grades of 6, 4 and 7 weighted 1, 1 and 2, a target average of 6, a final-assessment weight of 1 and a maximum of 10, you need a 6 on the remaining assessment.

Assumptions and limits

  • Use the same numeric scale for all grades and a period for decimal values.
  • Weights must be positive. If you leave previous weights blank, each grade counts as 1.
  • The calculator assumes the remaining assessment is added to the grades as a weighted average. Retake and rounding rules vary by institution.

Frequently asked questions

How is a weighted average calculated?

Multiply each grade by its weight, add the products, then divide by the sum of the weights.

What does a result above the maximum mean?

With the values entered, the required grade is higher than the maximum you set. Other assessments or rules may apply; check with your school.

Does this calculator decide whether I pass?

No. It estimates a result from your inputs. Your institution rules determine the official outcome.
