Savings goal calculator
Enter the amount you want to reach, the time frame, your starting balance and an optional monthly rate assumption. Compare contributions with no return and an estimate using that constant rate.
Calculate monthly contribution
Estimate assumptions
The starting balance grows at the same rate each month. Equal new contributions are made at the end of each month. The calculation excludes inflation, taxes, fees, rate changes, late deposits and withdrawals. Results depend on your inputs and are not guaranteed returns or financial advice.
How the calculation works
With no return, the monthly contribution is the goal minus the starting balance, divided by the number of months, with a minimum of zero. With monthly rate i and n months, the starting balance is projected as balance × (1 + i)^n. If a gap remains, the end-of-month contribution is the gap multiplied by i and divided by ((1 + i)^n − 1). When i = 0, the calculation uses simple division.
Frequently asked questions
Is the result guaranteed?
No. The rate is only a constant assumption that you enter. Actual returns may vary, be negative, and involve costs or taxes.
When are monthly contributions counted?
The estimate assumes new contributions are made at the end of each month; the starting balance is projected from the beginning of the time frame.
Does the calculation include inflation, taxes or fees?
No. It does not adjust the goal for inflation or calculate taxes and fees. Consider those factors separately when planning.
Can I use the calculator without assuming a return?
Yes. Leave the monthly rate at 0%. The tool divides the remaining amount by the number of months.
