Running pace calculator
Pace is the average time needed to cover a unit of distance. Enter a pace and distance to estimate finish time, or enter a target time to calculate the required average pace. Results are arithmetic estimates, not performance predictions.

Finish-time examples by pace
| Pace | 5 km | 10 km | Half marathon | Marathon |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7:00 | 35:00 | 1:10:00 | 2:27:41 | 4:55:22 |
| 6:00 | 30:00 | 1:00:00 | 2:06:35 | 4:13:10 |
| 5:00 | 25:00 | 50:00 | 1:45:29 | 3:30:59 |
| 4:30 | 22:30 | 45:00 | 1:34:56 | 3:09:53 |
How the calculation works
- Total time = pace × distance.
- Average pace = total time ÷ distance.
- Average speed in km/h = 60 ÷ pace in minutes per kilometre.
Example: 6:00 min/km over 10 km equals 60 minutes and an average speed of 10 km/h. The calculation does not account for stops, elevation, weather, or pace changes.
Distances and limitations
A half marathon is 21.0975 km and a marathon is 42.195 km. These are reference options; check the course and event rules before taking part. For a custom distance, enter kilometres, using the decimal separator accepted by your browser.
What the result does not tell you
The number does not predict your actual finish or indicate a safe training pace. Course conditions, distance measurement, stops, and changes in effort affect observed time. Treat it as an arithmetic estimate; seek appropriate professional guidance for an individual training plan.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an ideal pace for every runner?
No. Pace depends on the person, distance, goal, and conditions. This tool only converts time and distance.
Why can GPS and official time differ?
A watch estimates distance travelled; turns, route choice, and signal can make its reading differ from the official course distance. This calculator uses the distance you enter.
How do I convert pace to speed?
Divide 60 by pace expressed in minutes per kilometre. For example, 6 minutes per kilometre equals 10 km/h.
